COMPARE · US → MEXICO · PESITO IS PRE-LAUNCH

Pesito vs Venmo. One of them is being built for Mexico.

Venmo is great for splitting a dinner bill in Brooklyn. It is not great for sending money to your mom in Monterrey. In fact, it's impossible. Venmo is US-only. No Mexican bank, no OXXO, no $PesitoID, no dice.

Pesito is being built to be what Venmo would look like if PayPal had made it for the US → Mexico corridor. Pesito is pre-launch. Below is the honest comparison, with Pesito's planned pricing and planned features clearly marked.

If you try to send Venmo to Mexico, Venmo will simply refuse. Mexican users can't sign up, and your US balance won't cross the border on any Venmo product. From Venmo's own Help Center

Best for Sending money to family in Mexico once Pesito launches (planned) Splitting bills with US friends

Venmo's own help center confirms: Venmo can only be used to send money within the United States. Last checked April 2026. Pesito column shows planned launch pricing, not yet available. Your recipient's bank may charge its own fees, and foreign taxes may apply. A store's cash-out fee, if any, is passed through at cost and shown before you confirm.

So which PayPal-family app actually sends to Mexico?

Xoom, PayPal's international remittance brand, does, but the prices tell the story. Typical Xoom fees to Mexico are $3.99 to $7.99 per transfer, plus an exchange-rate markup of roughly 2 to 4% on the USD→MXN conversion that's folded silently into the rate.

On a $300 send, that's commonly $12 to $25 in visible fees plus another $6 to $12 absorbed via the rate. Wise is more transparent (~$3 to $4 + mid-market rate). Pesito's planned pricing takes a different shape: $0 and 0% FX on the Pesito network, so on that same $300 send the fee is $0 and all $300 is converted at the mid-market rate, with no FX spread by design; any rate margin would appear as a separate, disclosed line item. Planned launch pricing, not yet available; final pricing is always shown in the app before you pay and may change before launch.

Why Venmo never adds Mexico

Venmo built its stack on the US ACH network and US money-transmitter licensing. Going international would require re-licensing in every corridor country, integrating with foreign banks and wallets, building FX infrastructure, and rebuilding fraud models for cross-border patterns. Pesito is doing that work, for one corridor, done well, rather than bolting it onto a US social-payments app.

Frequently asked.

Can I send Venmo balance to Mexico?
No. Venmo is US-only. Your balance can't cross the border on any Venmo product. For sending to Mexico today, options include Xoom (PayPal's international brand, with higher fees and an FX spread), Wise, and Remitly. Pesito, purpose-built for the US → Mexico corridor, is pre-launch. Join the waitlist and we'll email you when the beta opens.
What's the cheapest Venmo alternative for Mexico?
Among live options today, compare Xoom ($3.99 to $7.99 + 2 to 4% FX markup), Wise (~$3 to $4 + mid-market rate), and Western Union (variable, often 5%+ all-in on cash sends). Pesito's planned launch pricing is $0 and 0% FX on the Pesito network, to a $PesitoID, a phone number or a claim link, and a standard withdrawal to a Mexican bank by SPEI is $0 too, but Pesito is pre-launch and not yet available. In practice: send $25 and all $25 gets converted; send $2,000 and all $2,000 gets converted. Final pricing is always shown in the app before you pay and may change before launch.
Does my Mexican family need a Pesito account to receive?
Pesito is pre-launch, so no one can receive yet, but the plan is: they receive on a $PesitoID or through a claim link, with no bank account needed, for $0 on the Pesito network. From there they can keep the money in Pesito or withdraw it to their Mexican bank via their CLABE, $0 at standard speed and by the next business day. Transfers will be subject to identity verification, corridor availability, limits, and compliance review.
Does the 1% US remittance tax apply to Pesito?
Pesito is pre-launch, so no Pesito transfers exist yet. Pesito is being designed so transfers would fall outside the excise: the 1% federal tax that took effect January 1, 2026, a government charge, not a Pesito fee, applies only to remittances funded by physical instruments, cash, money orders, cashier's checks, and Pesito's planned funding methods are debit card and bank transfer (ACH) only. Digital-funded transfers are exempt; this is the same exemption Remitly, Wise, and Xoom rely on. This is general information, not tax advice.
Is Pesito safer than sending physical cash?
It's being designed to be. In the planned flows, every transaction is digitally signed and auditable, and cash out at a store would require the recipient's own ID. Mailing a money order or cashier's check has none of those safeguards, and physical instruments now carry the 1% US remittance excise on top. Planned features, subject to change and regulatory approval.
Why is Pesito's planned pricing $0?
Two reasons. The network is ours: transfers between Pesito accounts move on the Pesito network, which runs on Pesito's own settlement infrastructure. You see and use dollars and pesos; there is nothing to buy, trade or manage. Moving a transfer across it costs the same whatever the amount. And the business is where money sits and how it is spent, the same structure Cash App and Chime use: interest on pooled balances, card interchange, and optional instant withdrawals. $0 and 0% FX on the Pesito network is planned launch pricing and may change before launch.
